So while Batman's actions in the movie may seem inconsistent with his moral code, the inconsistency itself is nevertheless inherited from the source material.

The final scene of the film sees Gordon summoning Batman for the first time with the Bat-Signal. Gordon informs Batman of a new criminal in Gotham — one who marks his crimes by leaving a Joker playing card.
